Who’s on First? ~ March 6, 2008

Welcome to the Dainty Rhino Productions blog. Over the months to come, this site will be filling out with articles based on my experiences working on a multi-million dollar game project as well as lone-wolfing it as an indie game developer. If you don’t care who I am, then skip the rest of this and come back in a couple weeks for the first real article.

Still with me? You three left in the back, pay attention. This is THE BIO!

Growing up during the arcade boom of the 80s, I was shocked to learn that actual, honest-to-crap human beings made the games I loved. From then on, I didn’t want to be a fireman, astronaut, or electrical engineer (my dad’s profession) any longer. I wanted to make games.

I suffered through school and at the end of college used my game demo to successfully land one of those coveted game jobs I’d heard so much about. I’d made it. I had my foot in the door and was working on a huge next-gen project with tons of talented people. Living the dream, as they say.

Then I saw my septuagenarian, second-grade teacher astride a three-legged hellephant. Naked. All my family and loved ones were impaled upon her finely-honed fingernails. Oh, and the hellephant stepped on every pet I’ve ever loved. Twice. Dream turned nightmare. That was my experience in the game industry.

Not all game companies are that bad, but I’m taking a break from the industry at large. Returning to my roots and working on small games. Games that I want to play. If I’m very lucky other people may want to play them too. If I’m unsurpassed in my luck, then maybe I’ll be able to follow one of these other people home from work and beg them for some pocket change.

So here we are. I’ve got a published console title under my belt, which doesn’t seem to mean a lot to HR people outside the industry. I’ve moved back in with my parents. I spend my days begging for some kind of computer work in a small, Midwestern town. And I’m broke 95% of the time.

Welcome to Indie Game Development!
